Have questions from the State of Egnyte Spring 2018 webinar you didn't get to ask live? Post them here and our product team will respond.
I have interest in document scanning for Adroid.
Hi @Mike Mercuri,
Thanks for letting us know! This is currently on our roadmap and you can track the progress of it by subscribing to the post here: https://community.egnyte.com/t5/Ideas/Scan-Documents-create-PDF-in-Egnyte-Mobile-App-android-ios/idi...
Hey! I missed the event today. Is it posted online anywhere for me to watch?
Hi @Andrew Baker, no worries! Here is the link: https://egnyte-university.egnyte.com/state-of-egnyte-spring-2018-on-demand
And if you have any questions for our product team, feel free to post it here. Thanks.
Q: In an Office "Shared" document, can two users edit the shared document at the same time in the same way OneDrive allows?
A: Yes, co-authoring is supported in our Office Online integration
Q: Is there Retina supported company logo for the preview window.
A: The preview screen doesn't show the company logo. We have increased the logo sizes that you can upload and the browser should do a good job of resizing this automatically if you're referring to the file link page.
A2: We'll look again at our max pixel size for logos and make sure that it is at least 2x the size that we display on the screen so that we get higher-fidelity logos.
Q: Does the Office online editor allow for simultaneous editing of Word and Excel documents?
A: Yes, our Office Online integration supports co-authoring (editing by multiple users at the same time)
Q: What would be a best practice for user permission groups then?
A: Best practice for permissions is to organize users into groups and then use these groups to grant permissions so that when a person joins or leaves the organization/team you can just change the group membership (and delegate that to business owners) instead of having to constantly change permissions.
Q: How do you turn on Meta data search?
A: Metadata search will automatically be enabled when custom metadata is setup for your account - this currently requires you to use our Public API to define the fields, their names, etc. If you need help you can reach out to our CSM or Support team and they can get you started.
Q: Is there the ability to preview INDD file types?
A: We've looked into this in the past and haven't had great luck due to the proprietary format and the prevalent use of linked files, but it's been awhile so we can see if the situation has changed.
Q: Is co-authoring going to be avaiable from the Desktop?
A: Currently Microsoft doesn't expose a way for third-party solutions (i.e. Egnyte in this case) to do coauthoring with the native desktop applications - they only make this available via Office Online. If you'd like support for this please follow up with your Microsoft reps since any feedback from customers helps them in prioritizing.
That said, our Desktop App will very soon add support for invoking Microsoft Office Online for collaborative editing directly from the Egnyte right-click menu.
Q: Is co-authoring in Office Online already working? also what about the Native app?
A: Yes, co-authoring in Office Online (browser version) is already available. Currently Microsoft doesn't expose a way for third-party solution (i.e.
Q: When previewing a file, I used to see a choice when I clicked Open In, with a drop down that said Edit on your desktop (for my installed Office 2016) and Office 365 online (which we have a subscription for). I now no longer get the choice for Word Online or any of the other Office Online applications. How do I get Office 365 back as an option?
A: You may need to ask your admin to enable the Office Online integration for your domain or go to the Apps & Add-ons page and enable it specifically for your user account.
Q: It would be nice to be able to make the changes to permissions from the report iteself in the UI.
A: We don't have any current plans in this area, but we can look into it. Add it to the Ideas board in the community and others can up-vote the idea by kudoing it so others can show their need for this idea as well and push it in our roadmap.
Q: This is what we do, but what is best practice if, Parent folder has 10 folders, and to manage people that can access only 7 folders that are from the same group. And another group has access to different folders. Is best practice to create 3 different groups and call them?
A: It is going to depend on the exact scenario and whether there are files at the root level that each group needs, but one approach would be to use non-inherited permissions on those 10 subfolders and set the specific groups that should have access there.
Q: So you can make a file with a set of people that can edit and be admins to change things throughout the system?
A: Our permissions support users with editor separate from your domain administrator accounts. Administrators have full permissions to all content. If you needed to grant non-Admins some admin functions, but still limit their permissions to content, we recommend using our role-based admin feature.
Q: With the SCIM 2.0 update, will we be able to sync groups?
A: Yes, our SCIM 2.0 implementation will support both user and group provisioning.
Q: Is the SCIM 2.0 only available for Enterprise like the AD tooklit?
A: No, SCIM 2.0 APIs will be available for all plans, but you will need an identity provider that can utilize those APIs.
Q: Is document scanner available for android also?
A: The document scanner is in development for Android - it is not available yet.
Q: I'd like an update on GSuite apps editing in Egnyte, both web and iOS. We run into all sorts of issues with both, with iOS being particularly challenging (can only view GSuite files in Egnyte, can't open them/edit them in their respective iOS app).
A: We are working with Google on this, but they currently don't provide any APIs or tools that allow us to invoke an edit session in their native application. It would be good to give feedback to Google about this as well since hearing from customers helps them to prioritize things.
Q: What about iOS drag and drop from Egnyte to Outlook?
A: The Egnyte app supports drag and drop to any app that supports drop actions - it is likely that Microsoft hasn't implemented this yet. I would suggest that you give this feedback to Microsoft since hearing directly from customers helps a lot in Microsoft prioritizing projects like this.
Q: Is co-authoring supported with Word installed on Windows?
A: Currently Microsoft doesn't expose a way for third-party solution (i.e. Egnyte in this case) to do coauthoring with the native desktop applications - they only make this available via Office Online. If you'd like support for this please follow up with your Microsoft reps since any feedback from customers helps them in prioritizing.
Q: Would like to customize links from the desktop apps.
A: What type of customization are you looking for - currently if you choose the option to share (but not copy) you can customize the link in the Web UI. Are you asking to have that be brought into the native app?
Q: What is the maximum server size for Turbo?
A: Currently the max size is 5GB, but we're working on increasing this to support much larger files (hundreds of GB).
Q: What is a Turbo device? Excuse my ignorance on this as we haven't deployed that with our Egnyte clients (only NAS with Storage Sync).
A: Turbo is the next generation version of Storage Sync that works hand in hand with the Desktop app - we'll have more content covered soon on this.
Q: Is Desktop Sync going to eventually be merged with Egnyte Connect? Many of our clients who use the offline mode in Drive are wondering if they still really need Desktop Sync as well and are getting a bit confused between the apps.
A: The Desktop App already does include an option to sync files locally which uses the same synchronization engine as desktop sync. You do need to enable this in settings (not all customers want this), but once enabled the right-click menu in Explorer/Finder gives you an option to sync data locally.
Q: What is the thinking between desktop app and desktop sync being distinct entities rather than different features of 1 software?
A: Desktop Sync existed initially, separate from our Egnyte Drive product which was purely a cloud mapped drive. With the addition of sync to Egnyte Drive (as well as Turbo functionality), we renamed Egnyte Drive to Desktop App.
Q: And a really big request I have made for a long time is to provide better, more visual notifications (taking advantage of the Mac's notification centre perhaps - we work with Macs mainly) so people actually pay attention to file syncing issues - so many of our clients don't notice the tiny icon changes. Also - better prompts for updating the actual apps with a Check for Updates feature etc.
A: We are working on improvements to the upgrade process. I'll pass on your feedback about the notification center but you can also post your suggestions in the Ideas section of the Community.
Q: What is the time line for Desktop App V3.0 release. AND what's the deal with its name... is it Egnyte Connect or the "Desktop App" ???
A: We don't have a date we can officially commit to, but we are hoping to have something available in 3-4 months. As for the name, "Egnyte Connect" is the overall name for the Egnyte file sharing solution (web, mobile, desktop, etc.) and Desktop App is the name for the desktop application, but that is shorthand for Egnyte Connect Desktop App - hope that helps!
Q: Does the guided login addition apply to users who are not logging in using SSO?
A: Yes - this will make it the same as the login approach that we have on the web and mobile apps.
Q: Are Sync Servers automatically going to be updated to "Turbo"?
A: No, Storage Sync and Turbo are different products and so Storage Sync cannot be upgraded to Turbo. Each has some shared, but also a number of different, use cases they can meet. If you want to learn more, please speak to your Account Manager or assigned CSM.
Q: If offline sync in Connect is turned on does Desktop Sync become redundant - we want to simplify the apps that are on a client's machine as much as possible. Sometimes having both Connect and Sync on a system can confuse clients.
A: Yes, we have many customers who have transitioned away from Desktop Sync to use just the Desktop App.
Q: Is there a file upload maximum?
A: Our plans have different max file sizes (e.g. 10gb for Business and 25gb for enterprise). For larger file sizes, we recommend using our sync products. If you need higher file sizes, please speak with your account manager.
Q: When will the non-inherited feature be released?
A: Non-inherited permissions can be enabled for any account if you request it from our support team, but we'll be turning it on for everyone in the next couple weeks.
Q: What is the timeline for the Turbo release?
A: The 1.0 Turbo release should be announced within the next 2 weeks.
Q: Will there be Turbo for small office NAS support? Will there be support for Turbo in the Netgear ReadyNAS client?
A: We are looking into potential solutions for brining Turbo to physical NAS devices but don't have anything that we can announce today.
Q: For the Migration Manager - what about a MacOS version? Migrating data can be very difficult, we have to use a 3rd party renamer often, sometimes migrations stop via FTP etc.
A: Currently we don't have plans to offer a native Mac or Windows version of the Migration Manager - we are looking into ways of running the VMs on desktops, but these will still require considerable memory.
Q: What is an assigned "CSM"?
A: Customer Success Manager - depending on your support level you may or may not have one assigned.
Q: In the integration will you be able to link your google to egnyte?
A: Yes - we already support an integration that does this, but in the newer integration it will be more seamless and store the actual content in Egnyte.
Q: The issue our clients have with the Connect app are temp file locations on the mac, Adobe file links in apps such as InDesign etc.
A: We are working on potential solutions to this problem - unfortunately many Adobe products force the use of absolute links instead of relative links and these make files much less portable from one user's computer to another's.
Q: How do I find out if I have an Account Manager or an assigned CSM? And how do I find out that person's contact info?
A: You can contact firstname.lastname@example.org and they will let you know.
Q: Will there be a way to convert a Storage Sync data drive to a Turbo data drive without having to resync all the data from the cloud?
A: We don't have a solution for this today, but we are looking into providing a migration tool to avoid having to resync data.
Q: How do you access Egnyte Community?
A: You can access it from the help menu in the Web UI or directly via community.egnyte.com.
Q: If I'm licensed for 4 Storage Sync Servers, does that transfer to Turbo?
A: Yes, licences can be used for either Storage Sync or Turbo.
Q: Does Turbo run on HyperV?
A: Yes, it runs on both HyperV and VMWare.
Q: Will Turbo be available on Netgear NAS?
A: We are currently researching NAS options for Turbo, but cannot announce anything at this time.
Q: Will Turbo ultimately replace Storage Sync? How will that work if you already have several Storage Sync devices with data syncing to multiple locations?
A: Storage Sync will continue to be maintained for the foreseeable future, but eventually Turbo will have a superset of the functionality and will likely be the best choice for most customers. We are working on an approach for migrating from Storage Sync to Turbo to avoid having to resync data.
Q: So Turbo will not work at all if the internet is down?
A: Correct, Turbo requires an Active internet connection. We are researching offline support for Turbo, similar to our Storage Sync product, but this is in the longer-term roadmap.
Q: Are there any plans to allow AFP connections to StorageSync/Turbo devices?
A: Storage Sync has a beta feature using the Samba "Fruit" module that provides much faster Mac access that exposes the share similar to AFP. Our support team can provide more details. Turbo uses a custom networking protocol.
Q: Does Turbo run o Egnye NAS?
A: Currently Turbo is only supported on virtual servers (Hyper-V or VMWare), but we are researching physical NAS storage solution options for Turbo.
