About a problem found working with Shared Excel Workbooks

Jump to solution

Good morning,

We want to ask you an important question, because we are at a critical point in our data migration from our file servers to Egnyte and some of our users have just told us about a problem they have encountered while working with their files in the cloud.

These users are dedicated to budgeting in Excel and use a feature called' Share Workbook' that allows multiple users to work on a book at the same time without having to go to Excel Online or files in the cloud. You can use this option with networked files in our office and from your Excel facilities on your computers. A user opens a file, shares it using the above option and works on the document. Another user opens the same file, starts working on it and every time one of the two users saves the document, the data that the other user has entered appears in his document. If the changes you make affect cells that have been changed by the other user, they are notified of the available options. It's a good option to work on one document at a time and, frankly, we didn't know this feature of Office.

We are now at the moment when these users start working with their files in Egnyte and although it seems to be still working for a while, there comes a time when they find themselves with Egnyte Connect file lock notifications that don't allow them to work as before. Is there any way that our users can continue to use the "Share Workbook" option as before?

Kind Regards,

Hello @Jose Manuel Val,

When the users work from the network drive, they are opening these files from the same destination server, but just from different computers. So that works when files are locallly available at a central data repository.

This certainly will not work via the Desktop App or the UI without the using Office Online.

If you happen to use our Storage Sync on Netgear,VM or Hyper-V, did you try this functionality there ?

Thanks.

Hello,

We tried to test it on Storage Sync and was a success.

Thanks!
