Is your folder structure a masterpiece or a maze?

One of the most frequent questions we see from new (and veteran!) admins is: "What is the 'perfect' way to set up my folders?"

While every business is different, there are proven strategies to ensure your Egnyte domain stays organized, scalable, and—most importantly—secure. We’ve updated our Best Practices for Creating a Folder Structure guide, covering the essentials like:

  • The "Top-Down" approach for permission management.

  • Flat vs. Deep hierarchies (and why "deep" can lead to path-length headaches).

  • Standardizing naming conventions to make search actually work for your users.

We want to hear from you!
Are you a fan of organizing by Department (Finance, Marketing, HR), or do you prefer a Project-based structure? Have you ever had to do a "grand migration" because a structure grew too complex?

We use a 3- or 4-letter acronym for our top level folders & use that throughout our Egnyte instance - for example, custom prompts for HR start with … HR, custom prompts for Accounting start with ACCT.  That makes it very easy for end users to know if that prompt is relevant to them.  We also use this for other reports - planning for long paths up front has been a godsend!
